Santa Bárbara Castle has a long and fascinating history. Its origins date back to the 9th century when it was built by the Moors as a defensive fortress. The castle, located on the top of Mount Benacantil, was a strategic point of defense for the city.
On December 4, 1248, on the day of Saint Barbara, the castle was conquered by Infante Alfonso of Castile. Since then, the castle has been named after this saint. Infante Alfonso later became known as Alfonso X the Wise.

Santa Bárbara Castle was the site of many conflicts, such as the Nine Years’ War in the 17th century, the War of the Spanish Succession in the 18th century, and the Cantonal Revolution in the 19th century. In 1709, during the siege of the castle by supporters of Philip V of Bourbon, a mine exploded, destroying part of the castle and causing an avalanche of debris that destroyed about 400 houses.
At the end of the 19th century, the castle was disarmed, and in 1912, renovation work was carried out, which included reforestation of the slopes of Mount Benacantil.
