In Xativa, on the “Sierra de Castell”, there is a double fortress divided into Castell Menor and Castell Mayor.
Castell Menor is the oldest part of the Iberian and Roman castle. Legend has it that Himilce’s wife Hanibal gave birth to a son here in 218 BC.
A little higher on the crest of Vernissa mountain rises the Castell Major, built in the Middle Ages. After the Christian conquest by Jaume I, it became the main fort between Castile and the capital of the Kingdom of Valencia.
