Plaza de España in Cuenca

Plaza de España is one of the most representative and historical squares in Cuenca. It is located in the heart of the old town, at the intersection of the main streets: Alfonso VIII, San Pedro and Carretería. Plaza de España is a meeting place and social life for residents and tourists, who can admire its architecture and atmosphere. Plaza de España is also the place where important events and ceremonies take place, such as patron saint festivals, fairs, concerts and shows.

Plaza de España has a rectangular shape, surrounded by three sides by historical buildings. In the middle of the square there is a fountain from the 18th century, which is a symbol of the city. Among the buildings stand out:

  • Bishop’s Palace: a magnificent building from the 18th century, which is the seat of the diocese of Cuenca. The palace has a facade of red stone and ornate balconies. In the palace there is a diocesan museum, which presents a collection of sacred art.
  • Church of San Nicolás: a Gothic church from the 14th century, which is one of the oldest in Cuenca. The church has a three-nave interior, with a rich main altar and valuable works of art. The church is also the burial place of many distinguished figures from the history of Cuenca.
  • Town Hall: a neoclassical building from the 19th century, which is the seat of the municipal authorities. The town hall has a facade of white stone and a portico with columns. On the facade there is the coat of arms of the city and the inscription “Fidelísima y Heroica Ciudad de Cuenca” (Most Faithful and Heroic City of Cuenca).
  • House of Culture: a modern building from the 20th century, which is the cultural center of the city. The house of culture has a facade of glass and metal and is connected to the town hall. In the house of culture there are exhibition halls, library, conference room and cinema.
