Mangana Tower in Cuenca

Mangana Tower is one of the most important and recognizable buildings in Cuenca. It is located on the square of the same name, on the site of a former Arab alcazar, or fortress. The tower was built in the 16th century, by order of King Charles V, as a city clock and bell tower. The tower has four floors and is topped by a dome with an iron cross. On each wall of the tower there is a clock face, and on the top there is a bell, which rings every hour.




Mangana Tower is a symbol of the city and its history. From its top there is a beautiful view of the old part of Cuenca, with the cathedral, the Hanging Houses and the bridge of St. Paul. The tower witnessed many events and changes that took place in Cuenca. In the 18th century the tower was damaged by an earthquake, and in the 19th century it was shot by the Napoleonic troops. In the 20th century the tower was restored and illuminated, and in 1996 it was declared a national monument.




Mangana Tower is open to visitors, who can enter its interior and admire the mechanism of the clock and the bell. You can also go to the viewpoint terrace, where you can admire the panorama of the city and the surroundings. The tower is open every day, except Mondays, and admission is free.
