Plaza de Toros in Huesca

If you are a fan of bullfighting, or want to get to know this part of Spanish culture and tradition, then Plaza de Toros, or the Bullring, is a place you must visit. The Plaza de Toros in Huesca was built in 1846 and is one of the oldest and most charming in Spain. It has an elliptical shape and can accommodate about 8,000 spectators.

It is open to visitors only during the bullfighting fairs, which take place in August, during the fiesta de San Lorenzo, or the feast of St. Lawrence. At that time, the best matadors and rejoneadors from Spain and abroad perform in the arena, as well as young novilleros, or novices, who want to prove themselves.

Plaza de Toros is not only a place where you can watch bullfights, but also a place where you can participate in other events related to bullfighting, such as:

  • El Encierro, or the Running of the Bulls, which involves the bulls that are to be used in the bullfight being released onto the city streets and chasing after people who run in front of them. The running of the bulls is very dangerous and requires a lot of courage and agility. It takes place every morning, from August 9 to 10, and starts at Santo Domingo Street and ends at Plaza de Toros.
  • El Concurso de Recortadores, or the Trimmers’ Contest, which involves a group of people, called trimmers, performing various acrobatics and dodges in front of the bull, without using any tools. The trimmers are judged by a jury and the audience based on style, courage, and difficulty. The contest usually takes place on August 11, at Plaza de Toros. El
  • Espectáculo de Humor Amarillo, or the Yellow Humor Show, which involves a group of people, dressed in yellow clothes, performing various funny tasks and games in the arena, while the bull tries to catch them. This show is inspired by a Japanese television program of the same name and aims to entertain the audience. This show usually takes place on August 12, at Plaza de Toros.

Plaza de Toros is open to visitors only during the bullfighting fairs, which take place in August, during the fiesta de San Lorenzo. The admission ticket for a bullfight or other event depends on the location, date, and category. There is the possibility of buying a ticket online or at the box office at Plaza de Toros. Plaza de Toros is not only an arena where bullfights take place, but also a place where you can get to know this part of Spanish culture and tradition, which arouses a lot of controversy and emotions. It is a place that offers something for everyone and is worth visiting during your stay in Huesca.
