Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church in Guadalest
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción en Guadalest, or the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Guadalest, is a beautiful Baroque temple from the 18th century, located in the old part of the town, within the walls of the historic Villa. The church is one of the most important religious and cultural monuments in Guadalest, as well as a place of worship and prayer for residents and tourists.
The church was built on the site of an earlier temple, which was often destroyed and looted by various armies, both Muslim and Christian. In 1740, after another attack, the church was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style, preserving some Gothic and Renaissance elements. In 1753, the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Orihuela.
In 1822, the church was again damaged by an earthquake, which caused part of the vault and tower to collapse. In 1824, it was rebuilt and renovated. In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, the church was set on fire and destroyed by Republican militiamen. In 1940, it was reconstructed and adorned with new works of art.
It has a rectangular plan, with one nave and four side chapels. The facade of the church is simple and modest with a stone portal and a small window. Above the facade rises a low, quadrangular tower, topped with a dome and a cross. The interior of the church is richly decorated, with numerous paintings, sculptures, and gildings. In the main altar, there is a beautiful sculpture of Our Lady of the Assumption, the patroness of Guadalest, surrounded by angels. In the side chapels, you can admire paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ and saints, such as the Annunciation, Nativity, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Francis of Assisi, and Saint Joseph. The church also houses a valuable organ from the 18th century, which is used during religious ceremonies.
