El Fadrí Bell Tower
Next to the cathedral stands a tall and slender bell tower, known as El Fadrí, which means “bachelor” in Valencian. It is one of the most recognizable and beloved buildings in Castellon. It is also one of the tallest and oldest bell towers in Spain.
El Fadrí was built in the 15th century, in the Gothic style, as part of the cathedral. However, in the 16th century, it was separated from it because it was considered to threaten its stability. Since then, the bell tower stands alone in the square, hence its name. It is 58 meters high and consists of four floors, topped with a helmet with an iron cross. On each floor, there are windows from which a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding area unfolds. On the highest floor, there are four bells, each with its own name and function. The largest of them, called Vicent, weighs over 2000 kg and only rings on special occasions.
El Fadrí is not only a bell tower but also a clock. On one of the walls, there is a clock face with Roman numerals and hands. On another wall, there is a sundial with a date indicator. On yet another wall, there is an astronomical clock with indicators of moon phases and zodiac signs. On the fourth wall, there is a clock with a carillon, which strikes a melody every hour and shows figures depicting scenes from the city’s history.
El Fadrí is not only a clock but also a watchtower. In the past, it served as an observation and defensive point, from which one could warn of danger or call to fight. During the civil war, the bell tower was bombed and damaged, but later it was restored and rebuilt. Inside the bell tower, there is a small museum where you can see exhibits related to the history and function of the bell tower, such as old clocks, bells, mechanisms, or documents.
You can climb to the top of the bell tower and admire the panorama of the city from different perspectives. You can also listen to stories about the bell tower, told by guides or audio guides. You can also participate in special events, such as concerts, exhibitions, or shows, which take place in the bell tower or in the square in front of it. It is a building that represents the history, culture, and identity of the city. It is a building that evokes emotions and memories in residents and visitors, which is part of the landscape and life of Castellón.
