Plaza del Azoguejo in Segovia

Plaza del Azoguejo is one of the most well-known and distinctive places in Segovia. This is where the highest part of the Roman aqueduct is located, which is a symbol of the city and one of the most magnificent monuments of antiquity. The aqueduct is 28 meters high and consists of 166 arches, which support over 15,000 granite blocks, laid without mortar. Its length is about 15 kilometers, of which 728 meters are visible in the city. It was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD to supply water from the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains to Segovia. To this day, it is in excellent condition and still serves its function.




Plaza del Azoguejo was once the market square of the city, where merchants, farmers, and craftsmen met. The name of the square comes from the word “azogue”, which meant mercury or silver. This is where trade in these metals took place, which were an important source of wealth for Segovia. There are also other interesting buildings on the square, such as the Church of San Sebastián from the 15th century, which was the coronation site of Isabella the Catholic, or houses with arcades, which give the square the charm of folk architecture.
