Palacio de Riofrío in Segovia

The Palacio de Riofrío is a hunting palace, which was built in the 18th century by Queen Isabella Farnese, widow of Philip V. The palace is rectangular in shape and is surrounded by a forest, where wild animals such as deer, roe deer, boars, and mouflons live. The palace houses a museum dedicated to the history of hunting and a collection of royal portraits. In one of the rooms, you can see the original electric chair, which was used by King Alfonso XIII. Near the palace, there is a chapel, where the remains of Queen Isabella and her son, King Charles III, rest.




The Palacio de Riofrío is located in the town of Riofrío, about 20 kilometers from Segovia and 10 kilometers from La Granja de San Ildefonso. Its name comes from the Riofrío river, which flows through the forest and creates picturesque water reservoirs. The palace was designed by the architect Virgilio Rabaglio, who had previously worked on the Palacio de La Granja.




The palace is in the neoclassical style and is divided into three parts: the proper palace, the infants’ palace, and the guest palace. In the proper palace, there are the most important rooms, such as the throne room, the audience room, the ballroom, the chapel, and the royal apartments. In the infants’ palace, there are rooms dedicated to the children of Isabella Farnese, such as the playroom, the games room, the map room, and the porcelain room. In the guest palace, there are rooms dedicated to guests, such as the dining room, the music room, the billiard room, and the herb room.
